Introduction
It’s a common question we get asked - how safe is whisky investment? In a world of economic uncertainty, it is a valid question and buying a cask should be carefully considered by any individual. Let's explore the pros and cons, alongside what you should consider before buying...
The Benefits Of Whisky Investment
There are three key reasons why whisky is seen as a secure alternative investment:

Benefit One: It’s a tangible asset
Unlike shares or digital assets, a cask is a physical object which naturally gains value through the maturation process. To bring that experience to you we opened our own Speyside Warehouse where you can come and visit your own cask, taste your whisky and even watch it be bottled.
Benefit Two: Supply and demand
The older a whisky gets, the rarer it becomes as most commercial whiskies are bottles at a younger age statement. Rare casks have fetched large sums at auction, especially those from limited releases or lost distilleries (no longer producing liquid). In addition there’s also a growing interest in whisky investment in Asia and other emerging markets which have created a new demand for luxury spirits.
Benefit Three: It has historical resilience
Whisky has performed well in the past even during economic blips, making it an attractive asset. From financial downturns to market volatility, the value of rare and well-aged whisky has often held steady while traditional assets faltered. This resilience is rooted in its finite supply, and continued global demand. Our analysis of the recent export figures from the Scotch Whisky Association explains recent market trends further.
The Considerations Of Whisky Investment
As with all investments there are always risks. Here are four key considerations you need to bear in mind before you decide if whisky is for you.
- Consideration One: Whisky casks take many years to mature. If you buy a young cask you may have to wait 10+ years to make a return you are happy with.
- Consideration Two: Market trends ultimately impact the desirability of your cask. While it may have gained value maturing, the provenance and demand for the distillery can impact how easily it will sell when it reaches maturity.
- Consideration Three: Whisky must be insured, properly stored and periodically assessed for quality and value. Casks which are not managed correctly may risk losing value through over-maturation or, in rare cases, leaks.
- Consideration Four: Cask authenticity should be thoroughly researched. Before you buy, there are a number of due diligence points we recommend carrying out so you can be sure you are partnering with a reputable cask company and buying authentic stock.
